THIS IS AN OLD WEBPAGE Click here for our new website http://www.houseofcheese.co.uk We weren't only there for the beer! How time flies! I can hardly believe a year has already passed since I wrote about our Arkell's evening in May 2000. Anyway, it was that time again last week; once again we loaded up the van with a big selection of cheeses and various other goodies and set off to Swindon to the annual wine tasting held at the Arkell's Brewery. The first time we went to the event, back in 1999, it was a dreary wet evening - last year was better, but this year the hazy sun disappeared completely behind clouds and once again rain and drizzle fell all evening. However, it did little to dampen the guests' spirits and people tucked enthusiastically into the spread we had provided. Last year certain cheeses were noticeably more popular than others. These were Montagnard, Boulette, Reblochon and Fourme d'Ambert, and they went well again. We took a selection of old favourites, such as Blue Corinium, extra mature farmhouse Cheddar, and Shipton Moyne - this year we also added some other lines (some of which are available on our website, others only from our shop). These included Exmoor Jersey Blue, Manchego, Clarines, Smoked Wensleydale, Perails, and Stinking Bishop. I have to say that either the guests were much hungrier this year or we got the balance about right, because not only just about all the cheese was eaten, but we also ran right out of bread, biscuits and celery! In fact, we had the impression that almost everyone enjoyed almost everything! Many thanks to all the Arkell family for their hospitality, to the stalwart ladies who washed up horribly sticky plates all evening, and to the guests who ate and bought with gusto and paid us so many compliments. In spite of aching feet, we had a really good time and look forward to next year's bash! |
